Organizational Profile: Rotaract

Aug 15, 2013 by

In honor of another successful Kicks in the Sticks, I thought I’d fill you in on Rotaract.  So many people ask me about Rotaract, I actually have a “canned” response in Outlook that I generally use.  But this is my blog.  This is where you get the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

For me, Rotaract was/is my home base for organizations.  Have you ever walked into a place, and after a while, said to yourself “These are my people?!?” For me, it has only happened twice in my life.

The first time, I was 17.  I had, like most teenagers, felt out of place…a lot.  When I got to Truman State, suddenly I had a sense of belonging.  After only a week or so on campus, I can remember standing near the Student Union and having a sudden rush of emotion and an epiphany, thinking, and perhaps speaking out loud (but to myself): “These are my people.”   (Minus the LARPers).

At the time, it meant: these are people who are here to learn, these are people who will challenge me, these are people who know how to have fun, I will be a better person by knowing these people.

The second (and last time) I have had these sense about a community of people has been with Rotaract.  I *think* I started attending Rotaract in 2007.  I specifically remember a phone call from my friend, Jeff Davidson (now General Manager with Brown Printing) asking me to attend a Rotaract meeting.  Jeff and I weren’t particularly close friends, nor was I friends with anyone else in the club.  I took him up on the invite, and began attending meetings (which were usually at Gumbo Bottoms).  I grew to love the Club. Despite returning to Columbia for law school, I made every attempt to attend Rotaract meetings, knowing that I wanted to return to Jefferson City for work.   I’m so glad I did.

Then, and now, “These are my people” means: these are people who are here to make a difference, these are people who will challenge me, these are people who know how to have fun, I will be a better person by knowing these people.

These are my people.

We happen to take pretty sweet group photos.

We are all friends.  I serve on their committees (outside of Rotaract) and they serve on mine.  We count on one another.  I have their cell phone numbers and they have mine.  We welcome each other into one another’s homes and have celebrated marriages, career successes, and now births of the next generation of Rotaracters.

But above all else, we serve together.

Kicks in the Sticks 2012

We had such a wonderful day Saturday at Kicks in the Sticks raising money for Buddy Packs and HALO.  It is truly a showcase of what Rotaract is all about and a showcase of the generous support of our community.  Check back this week for a full recap.

Have you found your organizational home base?  Who are your people?  Want to know more about Rotaract? Better start training now, I hear our next meeting is at CrossFit (just kidding – no WODs, only learning).
